Search Technique 5

Numerical Ranges: ( ... )


What is it: Numerical Ranges (...)

How to use it: Place the numerical ranges between dates you are searching.
For example, to find out information about an individual named Brad Thor between the dates of 2005 - 2009 then type the following:  Brad Thor 2005...2009

Conclusion: Search results that yield information about Brad Thor during this period of time.

Multiple Words: ( OR )


What is it: The word "OR"

How to use it: Place the word OR between two words (i.e. Scotland OR United States) when doing a search.

Conclusion: Your search results will yield websites with information about either word.

What is it: It is a Tilde ( ~ ).

How to use it: Place the ~ before the word you want to search. For example ( ~cell phone)

Conclusion: Your results should yield information on the word "cell" and "phone" as well as its synonyms.

What is it: It is a dash (i.e. - )

How to use it: Place a - between words or phrases in order to exclude generating search results for the word or phrase on the right side of the dash.

For example: Bass - Fishing

Conclusion: This will yield results based on the word "Bass" and not on the word "Fishing" or "Bass Fishing".

What is it: Double Quotes (i.e. " " )

How to us it: "Place a word, or phrase within the double quotes when completing a search"

Conclusion: Searching this way will generate results based on what you placed within the double quotes.

Library Workshops!

Two new workshops are now available at Roberts Library:

On October 6th there will be a workshop on Microsoft Word 2007. Students will learn the basics of the new Word program during this 45 minute session. From bullet points to margins, the workshop will cover several different areas and provide hands on experience. Please register by emailing stokes@daltonstate.edu.

On October 15th there will be a workshop on Microsoft Power Point 2007. Students will learn how to make a presentation that stands out from the rest. The workshop will cover things like adding a video, changing the background and utilizing templates. Please register by emailing sstokes@daltonstate.edu.

Writing Workshops are here!

Starting this fall, the Dalton State College Writing Lab and the Derrell C. Roberts Library are partnering to offer 30-60 minute workshops for students.

There will be three workshops offered in September, and the workshops will be held in the Robert's Library Wireless Classroom (Room 113).  

Students will have hands-on practice and handouts will be provided. Contact Leslie Collins (lcollins@daltonstate.edu) or Melissa Whitesell (mwhitesell@daltonstate.edu) to reserve your space.

Classes are as follows:

  1. Writing Basics - Wednesday, Sept. 16th -  1:45-2:30 pm
    Learn how to select a topic, develop a thesis statement,
    and create an outline.

  2. Ready, Set, Research - Wednesday, Sept. 23rd -  1:45-2:30 pm
    Learn how to evaluate sources for your topic, locate scholarly
    (peer-reviewed) sources, and collect citation information.

  3. Citing Your Sources - Wednesday, Sept. 30th -  1:45-2:30 pm       
    Learn what should be cited in your paper to avoid plagiarism
    and how to decode citation information. Use your own
    research to create a short annotated bibliography.

Please Welcome Dr. John Fowler!


Bandy Heritage Center

DR. JOHN D. FOWLER has been named the B.J. and Dicksie Bandy Chair of History at Dalton State College. Dr. Fowler will teach courses within the Social Sciences department as well as develop the Bandy Heritage Center. The Center will provide a forum for outreach programming, lectures, conferences and seminars for the public as well as for area social studies teachers. Areas of concentration will include Native American heritage, the Civil War, and development of the carpet and rug industry in the Northwest Georgia region. In time, the Bandy Heritage Center will also include museum and exhibit space.

Dr. Fowler served as Associate Professor of History and as a Co- Director for the Center for the Study of the Civil War Era at Kennesaw State University. He holds a B.A. and Master’s Degree in History from Eastern Kentucky University and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Tennessee. Dr. Fowler has authored two books, Mountaineers in Gray: the 19th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment, CSA for which he won the prestigious Mrs. Simon Baruch Award and The Confederate Experience, a textbook on the Confederacy. In addition to these titles, Dr. Fowler has three other books forthcoming including Awash in the Storm: Tennessee During the Civil War Era, Southern Independence Is My Sentiment: Liberty or Death: Southern Appalachia’s Confederate Experience and The Confederacy: Essential Documents and Essays.

Dr. Fowler’s office and the core of the collection to be included in the Bandy Heritage Center is currently located in the Derrell C. Roberts Library. For more information about the Bandy Heritage Center, visit the web page at http://www.daltonstate.edu/bandyheritagecenter/
