Fall Theatrical Performance

The fall play, "Overdue", written by student Joshua Beard and directed by Jackie Daniels is a comedy which centers around a group of young adults working in the Press Play video store.  The play will be performed Thursday through Saturday, November 14, 15, and 16 at 7:00pm and on Sunday, November 17 at 2:00pm.

Beard, a student at Dalton State, was inspired by his experiences at Blockbuster Video as a teenager. “I spent the bulk of high school working in a video store,” says Beard. “The setting lends itself to so many types of jokes; you can make an endless number of movie references and gags.”

The performance is free for Dalton State students, others may purchase tickets at the door for $5.00.  For more information, contact 706.272.2451.

Oral History Project Sponsored by Center for Public History

Have you ever worked in a cotton mill, hosiery mill, or apparel factory in the Dalton area? Do you have stories to share about your employment or living in a mill village? We want to hear about your or your family’s experiences. The Center for Public History at the University of West Georgia in cooperation with the Bandy Heritage Center at Dalton State College invites you to join us on November 10th from 1 PM to 5 PM for a Textile History Day at the Dalton Area Convention & Visitors Bureau located in the Freight Depot to share your story!

We will be recording your stories and memories by conducting short 15-20 minute oral history interviews and scanning photographs or documents related to the textile industry in Dalton.

All interviews and scanned images will be archived at the Center for Public History at the University of West Georgia for research purposes.

Hosted by the Center for Public History, this History Day is part of a larger Textile Heritage Trail that the Center is developing. It will run from Dalton to Columbus, Georgia along Highway 27, and will tell the story of textile history in the greater West Georgia region. As an institutional member and partner in the Textile Heritage Trail project, the Bandy Heritage Center recognizes and celebrates the significance of Dalton’s carpet industry as the culmination of Georgia’s textile industry.

For more information about this event, please contact Daniel Kellogg at the Center for Public History at 678-839-6141 or by email at wgtht@westga.edu.

Pilsbury Diary Unveiled at Bandy Center Reception

On June 20, 2013, the Bandy Heritage Center, in partnership with the Daughters of the American Revolution, Robert Loughridge Chapter, will host a reception in Room 105 of the James E. Brown Center to unveil an exceptional diary written by William Kennedy Pilsbury. Mr. Pilsbury fought at the Battle of Chickamauga as a member of the 5th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

Pilsbury's diary is a hand written, eyewitness account of the Chickamauga battle. The diary, complied in the years shortly before Pilsbury's death in 1898, also traced his genealogy, which included a great-grandfather who fought in the American Revolution, and included his poetry and accumulated articles from his career as a teacher and newspaper reporter and editor.

In order to preserve the diary for future public interest and research, Bandy Center staffers Amanda Kelley and Justin Hayes (pictured) first carefully seperated the pages of the diary to preserve their integrity. The pages were then scanned and digitized for inclusion in the Center's electronic archives.

The Bandy Center is grateful for the generosity of the DAR's Robert Loughridge Chapter in allowing it to add this unique document to its permanent archives.

eMajor

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved Dalton State College’s applications to offer a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and to participate in an online Organizational Leadership program, bringing to 16 the number of four-year degrees offered by the local college.

Both new degree programs are specifically geared to working learners who want to earn a bachelor’s degree, according to Dr. Sandra Stone, Vice President for Academic Affairs.  The online degree program in Organizational Leadership represents the University System’s first collaborative effort to provide a USG bachelor’s degree program delivered completely in a virtual environment. Participating students will take core curriculum classes through the System’s eCore system and then concentrate in one of several areas.

Valdosta State University contributes concentrations in public service administration, office administration and technology, legal office administration, and law enforcement leadership; Dalton State will contribute a health care administration track and will expand the options for all students in the eMajor.

“This Organizational Leadership eMajor will help meet growing occupational demands in Northwest Georgia that require advanced leadership skills,” Stone said. “Department of Labor projections call for 45 percent growth in ambulatory health care services, 29 percent growth in hospitals, and a 27 percent increase in nursing and residential care facilities by 2018,” she said.

“Both of these new degree programs offer flexibility for adult students anxious to begin or resume a college education,” said Dalton State President Dr. John O. Schwenn. “We are proud to add them to our lineup, and we have several more degree program applications in various stages of completion.”

Enrollment in both new programs begins immediately, Stone said. Those needing more information are invited to call Dalton State College at 706-272-4436.

Microsoft Office Alternative

If you're a Windows PC user, you're probably familiar with Microsoft's Office applications. Of these applications Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are unquestionably the most widely used. Kingsoft Software has produced what looks to be a solid alternative for those who need the functionality of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but not at the premium Microsoft price. In fact, Kingsoft's Office Suite Free 2013 is just that, free. The software strongly resembles the already familiar Microsoft Office application interface, meaning you'll feel at home the first time you open the software. As this software is free, it expectedly lacks some premium features, such as the only being able to save in older Office file formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt). This may be a deal-breaker for some, but bear in mind that Kingsoft also offers the more premium Office Professional 2013 Suite. Kingsoft offers some free apps for iOS and Android operating systems as well, meaning you can put them to use on a tablet and/or smartphone. If you're in need of a good, but free office client, give Kingsoft's Office Suite Free 2013 a try today:
