May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Go Get Fit!

If you need ideas or tips to get you started in the right direction, GALILEO offers access to the full text of several popular sports and fitness magazines.

QUICK TIP:  Journal and search links may not work off site. Log in to GALILEO first for access.

In GALILEO, you will find titles such as Sports Illustrated, Men’s Fitness, Running and FitNews, and Shape, and it also includes some publications for those more serious about exercise, such as American Fitness, Bicycling, DIRTSports, Joe Weidner’s Muscle and Fitness, Swimming World, and Runner’s World. Just go to Magazines A-Z to search for these or magazines that you like. If you want to know when a new issue is added, you can set up a journal alert.

In addition to the magazines, you can find many more articles, fact sheets, and more in several databases, such as MasterFILE Premier, Consumer Health Complete, or Research Library. Just search physical fitness, sports, or exercise in these or other databases listed in the Exercise subject area of GALILEO. If you have a particular topic that you like, you can set up a search alert so that you will receive emails when an article about your topic is added.

Summer Science Camps for Kids

Creek Critters, Stream Stomp Returning to Dalton State

Dr. John Lugthart
The Dalton State Foundation is reviving two of the College’s most popular summer science camps for kids. “Creek Critters” and “Stream Stomp,” which both introduce children to the wonders of stream ecosystems, will be offered in June for children ages five through 11.

As they were in the past, both programs will be led by Dalton State biology instructors Dr. John and Gretchen Lugthart.

Creek Critters is designed for children ages five to six and will meet from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on two consecutive Monday afternoons, June 6 and June 13. Cost of the class is $75; a discount is offered for children of Dalton State alumni.

Stream Stomp, for kids seven to eleven, will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon on two consecutive Fridays, June 10 and June 17. Cost of Stream Stomp is $90 with a discount offered for children of alumni.
All participants are advised to wear old clothes and shoes that can get wet.

Space is limited in both classes; registration before May 25 and advance payment are required. To register or to learn more, contact the Dalton State Foundation at 706-272-4473 before May 25.

Lunch & Learn about the Civil War

Dr. John Fowler
Dalton State Alumni Lunch & Learn
Thursday, May 12, from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m.
Gordon County Chamber of Commerce, 300 S. Wall Street, Calhoun, GA

Dr. John Fowler presents "'I cannot give the history of this campaign language to describe its suffering': The Confederate Struggle for Atlanta."
This program will be based on a chapter from Dr. Fowler’s new book, “The Breaking of the Heartland: The Civil War in Georgia,” that is due out this month.  “An examination of the Atlanta Campaign reveals a complex and debatable series of mysterious events and conflicting interpretations,” says Dr. Fowler. “Six questions are crucial to understanding the Confederate view of the campaign and analyzing the answers to these questions in order to develop a better understanding of what happened during what was arguably the single most important campaign of the entire war.”

Reservations and advance payment are required no later than Tuesday, May 10, at 12 noon. $8 for Dalton State alumni; $10 for the general public. RSVP to alumni@daltonstate.edu or call 706-272-2473.

Tornado Relief

The American Red Cross has placed boxes around campus (Student Center, Library, Liberal Arts, Technical Building) to collect relief items, or you can bring items directly to the Office of Students Life.

Items Most Needed:
Bottled Water
Food (include baby food)
Paper Towels
Toilet Paper
Hand Sanitizer
Personal Care Items

According to the Red Cross as of this moment at least 150 people need emergency shelter in Catoosa County and 200 in Dade County. These individuals have lost everything. Right now the best thing we can do is donate relief items. A member of the Red Cross will be coming to campus to pick-up the donated items through May 6. According to the Red Cross, please do not attempt to visit these areas and deliver relief items yourself. This could hinder rescue and relief efforts.

If you have questions please contact Shawntay Simones at ssimones@daltonstate.edu
