Lunch and Learn

“Media Depictions of Poverty in America” will be the topic of a Lunch & Learn program hosted by the Dalton State Foundation Thursday, April 11. The program will be presented by Matt Hipps, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Dalton State.

Extending the work of previous scholars in the field, Hipps will examine media bias and its influence on public perceptions of the working poor and less fortunate, exploring what’s true and what’s exaggerated in our news and other information sources.

Hipps earned his master’s degree in public administration from West Virginia University and his bachelor’s degree in political science from West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Reservations and payment are required in advance and may be made online at www.alumni.daltonstate.edu/events. Cost is $10 and includes lunch.

The program begins at 12 noon in room 105 of The James E. Brown Center at the north end of the Dalton State campus. Those with questions are invited to contact the Dalton State Foundation by calling 706-272-4473.

Dalton State Lunch & Learn programs are open to the public, ages 12 and older. Refunds are offered only on the occasion of an event cancellation by the Dalton State Foundation.

Read Japan

Readers with an interest in Japanese history, life, and culture are invited to check out the new “Read Japan” collection recently donated to Dalton State’s Roberts Library by the Nippon Foundation.

According to Roberts Library Director Lydia Knight, the collection includes 100 academic and university press books selected by a committee of Japanese and foreign scholars and journalists. The collection covers topics ranging from anime to samurai, Knight said. Volumes are sorted into five categories including politics and international relations, economy and business, society and culture, literature and arts, and history.
In our global society where information can be readily accessed with a single click, it can be easy to forget to place news and information into a cultural context.

“It is now possible to exchange vast volumes of information through cyberspace in real time,” said a representative of the Nippon Foundation. “This unprecedented access to information has made the realities of foreign countries feel much closer to us. However, we do not always receive a complete picture of life overseas.”  “An understanding of other people is essential if we are to collaborate and coexist with people of different cultures and customs,” he said. “We hope this will serve as a useful guide to those interested in deepening their understanding of present day Japan.”

Lunch and Learn

“Birds of Georgia” will be the topic when Dr. David DesRochers, Assistant Professor of Biology at Dalton State College, addresses a Lunch & Learn program sponsored by the Dalton State Foundation Friday, March 15, at 12 noon in The James E. Brown Center.

“The State of Georgia provides habitat to more than 400 species of birds that spend part or all of their lives here,” says DesRochers. With a background in bird ecology and conservation, Dr. DesRochers will provide Lunch & Learn attendees with a brief overview of the lives of several representative bird species.
DesRochers came to Dalton State in 2010 after completing his master’s degree at The College of William & Mary and his Ph.D. at Tufts University.

Cost of the lunch program is $10; reservations are required by March 13 and may be made online at www.alumni.daltonstate.edu/events. Those with questions are invited to contact the Dalton State Foundation at 706-272-4473.

The Roberts Library also has an excellent Orinthology LibGuide which provides links to web sites, online databases, and lists of books available in the library.
